Bruschetta alla Julie and Julia

The food: Bruschetta with heirloom tomatoes, olive oil and basil

P1010801

The story:

Courtesy of my cousin Anne (thanks again, Anne!), I attended an advance screening of Julie and Julia, which opens Friday August 7, and is, not incidentally, the embodiment of every food blogger’s dream: to get a book deal, and then have the book made into a major motion picture directed by Nora Ephron, Food Hall of Famer for her seminal food novel Heartburn.

I enjoyed the movie, especially Meryl Streep’s turn as Julia Child, and I’ve already printed out the recipe for Boeuf Bourguignon from Mastering the Art of French Cooking that was featured in the movie – the book’s publisher, Knopf Doubleday, has cannily made it available online.

But, to me, the most appealing (and saliva inducing) food in the movie was the bruschetta (which is pronounced brus-ketta, by the way, I looked it up) with fresh tomatoes, made in an early scene by the Julie Powell character (played by Amy Adams), and eaten with great gusto by menschy actor Chris Messina, who plays Powell’s husband, and who, according to an interesting New York Times story about the film’s food styling: “had a great appetite and never complained, even on the day he had to enthusiastically eat bruschetta topped with tomatoes 36 times.”

My version of the movie’s bruschetta uses Ace Bakery rosemary focaccia bread and some heirloom type tomatoes.

First, I fried, yes, fried – like in the movie! – the slices of bread in olive oil.

P1010789

Then I rubbed the fried bread with a halved garlic clove.

P1010792

Here are the tomatoes, chopped, seeded where necessary, salted with large flake sea salt, and drizzled with olive oil:

P1010794

I spooned the tomatoes onto the bread, scattered some chopped basil over top, dug in, said, “This is so good!” and hoped (and very much doubted) that I looked half as attractive with oil and tomato juice dribbling down my chin as Chris Messina does in the movie.

Bruschetta alla Julie and Julia – Recipe

4 slices rough textured bread, such as focaccia, or from a crusty baguette, cut lengthwise
16 oz. assorted heirloom type tomatoes (I used President’s Choice Rainbow heirloom cherry tomatoes) chopped and seeded if the seeds look sketchy
extra virgin olive oil
1 clove garlic, peeled and halved
sea salt
chopped fresh basil

1. Toss tomatoes with 1 T. olive oil and about 1 tsp. sea salt.
2. Fry bread in 2-3 T. olive oil in skillet, browning on each side, and adding 1 more T. oil if necessary.
3. Rub cut half of garlic over 1 side of fried bread.
4. Spoon tomatoes (with oil and accumulated juices) over bread. Top with chopped basil and more sea salt to taste.
5. Eat with plenty of napkins on hand.

Serves 2.

  2. hungrynovelist says:

You’re welcome! And if you’re like me, you won’t just be eating it tonight, you’ll be making it again tomorrow, and the next day and maybe the day after that … Bon appetit!

    • Lynette F. says:

I have been thinking about making it for dinner, but is it a meal within it’s self, or should I add something to it so I have enough to eat?

      • hungrynovelist says:

Whether it’s dinner depends how many pieces of bread you eat it with, I guess! In the movie, it was dinner, but you could always treat it as an hors d’oeuvre if you wish …

  3. Ashlee says:

Ever since I went to see the movie last night, I have been drooling for this! The way that the bread was fried and the crunch that was there was just stomach grumbling! I cannot wait to try this!!! Thank you!

  4. Linda - Plantation, FL says:

OMG! Yes, it was THIS “brusketta” that had me running straight from the movie to the grocery store, then Googled to double check if fried in butter or olive oil! LOVE your pics! Thanks for your recipe. I especially love the idea of simply rubbing the garlic half onto the bread–not overwhelming! Thank you! 🙂

  5. Karen says:

Thank you for posting this!! I saw the movie on saturday nite and have not stop thinking about making this. In the scene when Chris Messina was eating it, it looked so delicious! Apparently a few others thought the same…great posting-keep them coming 🙂

  6. Jeannette says:

Oh my goodness thank you!!! I have been dying to make this ever since seeing it in the movie, but knew I would screw it up somehow if I didnt have a recipe. So thank you a million times over!!!

  7. Jennifer says:

THANK YOU for the recipe. I loved the movie (all of it, not just the parts with Meryl). The one food that stuck in my mind and has caused craving is the Bruschetta. I will definitely make it for my husband, who also is craving it. Frying the bread looked like one of the keys to making it delectable.

  8. Nadine says:

Ok..I loved the movie..the acting, the wonderful food and so forth..but I was home sick (home is Brussels Belgium) as I remembered all these wonderful lively dinners with great conversation, superb food and fabulous wines we used to have..

By the way..try a little twig of fresh mint with the basil..it brings a wouuuu aftertaste and a feast of sapid and odorous essences .

  9. Georgene says:

Made it last night with the heirloom tomatoes chopped very fine and seeded. Not only was it incredible tasting, it looked beautiful as well with all the colors. Tip: Add a pat of butter to olive oil. It keeps it from burning!

  10. wendy says:

i am so glad you worked this out for me;p i just about drowned in my own drool when this scene was on! off to the farm stand for the tomatoes!

  11. michelle says:

dito, dito, dito, my goodness was a Movie scene ever more devoured, it has been driving me crazy. it is wonderful to know I am in good company Bravo!

  12. Kayla says:

OH MY GOD! i completely agree. as soon as my mother and I left the movie we ran to the grocery store to make it. it was by far the the best scene. i noticed my head moving closer and closer to the movie screen like i was trying to get a bite or it was callinig me forward!

  13. debra says:

How true; I have been salivating for Julia’s bruschetta since seeing the movie last weekend. I look forward to trying your version as well. Thanks for posting it.

The most incredible real-life memory of Julia for me was my mother, who was a founding member of Les Dames d’Escoffier, hosting the Les Dames tribute dinner for Julia’s 90th birthday.

    She has come alive AGAIN.

  14. Judy says:

This is so helpful. Can’t wait to try it. It was the most memorable scene from the movie. I felt I could taste it! The next best was the chocolate cake with almonds around the sides. Any chance you have that recipe? It looked amazing.
    Thank you!

  15. Chris says:

Say Hungrynovelist – where in Julia’s MTAFC is the Bruschetta recipe? I’ve gone thru it and, alas – cannot find. I’ve got yours, but it would be nice to be able to open the book and read it exactly as Julia prepared it. thx a bunch

    • hungrynovelist says:

The reason the bruschetta recipe is not in MTAFC is because it shows up in the movie at a point before Julie Powell starts cooking from Julia Child’s book! An article about the movie’s food quotes culinary consultant Susan Spungen saying she made the bruschetta for the film combining her own methods with those of the director Nora Ephron, whose (great) idea it was to fry the bread, apparently. Mmm, fried bread.

  16. Chris says:

Well, it was an outstanding idea, it stole the show. I did wonder if it was before her doing Julia’s recipes. Thanks for clearing that up. And for the recipe! And fried is always better.

  17. Meghan says:

OMG THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!! I saw the movie with my mom on Sunday and I have been thinking about this delcious dish ever since. I was sooooooooo excited when I found this recipe thanks so much for doing the leg work for me 🙂

  18. Joanna says:

I was so wanting this recipe. When I saw her eat this I was starving for it the rest of the day. She made it look so good eating it. I’m going home to make it tonight.

  19. Sheri says:

I haven’t been able to get that scene out of my head since seeing the movie last week! The crunch of that bread with those drippy, juicy, delicious tomatoes is almost more than I can bear. Thanks so much for posting the recipe. Perfect timing too….can you imagine if we all had to wait 6 months for ripe summer tomatoes???

  20. pam says:

I saw the movie last night and I have many beatiful ripe jersey tomatoes. I’m making this tonight. Great pictures. What else will you be making from the movie?

  21. Sara says:

I just stumbled upon this recipe b/c I was picking tomatoes in my garden. I realized that I didn’t know what to do with them, and I didn’t want them to go to waste. I remembered the scene from the movie and it was the most delicious looking thing in the movie. I only had my regular hybrid tomatoes, and I seeded and tossed them with some olive oil and basil. The bread was left over from a party I had this weekend. It was so delicious, and FAST! Thank you so much!

  22. morganrenee says:

I just googled “fried bread from Julie and Julia” and your blog popped up! Thank you for supplying the recipe! I was pretty sure the recipe was pretty straight forward–but wanted verification so was poking around online.

Did you try it with butter instead of olive oil? Or, a combination?

    • hungrynovelist says:

You’re welcome! I’ve only fried the bread in olive oil because it matches the tomatoes (tossed with olive oil) that way, and layers on the olive oil flavour. But fried bread with butter seems to be a popular approach.

  23. Laurel says:

Thank you very much for posting this! I made it last night, and it was absolutely one of the best things I have ever tasted. I could have used some Tums afterward, though 😉

  24. Alexis Friedman says:

I wanted to make Bruschetta tonight for my dinner party and no recipe I found sounded as good as the one used in the movie. So I just took and chanse and googled my request for recipe from the movie and there it was and there you were! What a treat!! Thank you for taking the time to figure out how to make it as beautifully as they did in the movie. I’ll let you know how it tastes too.
Thank you and Bon Apetit! (hope I spelled this correctly)
    Alexis

  25. Debbie says:

Thank you, thank you!! I will be making this tonight with sausage on the side (I think that’s what they had in the movie). I have been salivating since I saw the movie last week (and am doing so again as I think of the ‘bruschetta’ scene). I did, like many others, run to the store the next day to get ingredients to make the beef bourguignon. It was so worth the time and effort!!! My family loved it and I will definitely make it again. I feel like I’m part of a Julia cult. Everyone that sees the movie is infatuated with the food. Though I love, love, love cooking, summer seems to get me out of the kitchen too often. Maybe this movie will bring everyone back to the dinner table. YUM!!!

  26. Chris says:

Made the Bruschetta Wednesday for a friend. It was the first time I made it and it must have been beginners luck because it was perfect!! So I made it again the next night to finish off the heirloom tomatoes and it wasn’t as good. Maybe it was the company!! thx

  27. Sara says:

My mom served this recipe as an appetizer for my birthday. It was so delicious, I couldn’t stop eating it. We all loved it so much that she had to fry up another batch of bread. It was all gone all too fast. If there had been enough, I would have eaten it for the main course as well!

Thank you for posting this, it made turning 27 that much better!

  28. liz says:

oh my god i have not stopped cooking since i seen this movie…. had some julia inspiration last night and decided to make up a lamb hot pot recipie (could have been a disaster) it was divine with creamy mash and followed by home made chocolate fudge brownies!!!!! yum tonight is home made pizza (not very french i know but yummy) and tomorrow thax to you….will be bruchetta i cannot wait…… i just love food 😀

  29. Meredith says:

Thank you for posting! It’s been two months since I saw the movie. I just googled, “bruschetta recipe from Julie and Julia” and there you were!!! I am trying it tonight! I kept mentioning that scene to my husband time and time again, forgetting he hadn’t seen the movie, ahh! Cannot wait till it comes out on DVD.

  30. cherylitta says:

I just saw the movie and I agree ..it was the food I wished I was sitting there eating myself ! I wonder if after 36 takes he still thought it tasted good ..was it good acting ? I think NOT ! It does look so delicioso . At first I couldn’t figure out what it was .. and then it came to me – bruschetta..yes !… so I googled and found you …thank you for the recipe ..I will try it very soon.. fry bread in olive oil too . The other yum was that chocolate creme pie she made. Tell me .. how could she cook so good, eat so late at night .. and still be so thin ? Now if you had that recipe ???? heha…thanks again…

  31. Christine says:

Thanks for posting this! I have been obsessing about the same recipe for over 5 days now ( I saw the movie earlier this week). You are a true angel! Now, I just need to buy the ingredients so I could prepare this in time for my husband’s arrival from work

  32. Susan Beals says:

Just finally saw the movie. Made the bruschetta the next day – WOW. Ate myself into a big fat toad!!!! Bought BOTH the books – volume I and II. Told my family I will be cooking once or twice a month (not every day) for a year and we will discuss again on Thanksgiving. They will be the recipients of some wonderful food this year. I am about to be 64 and think this will be a wonderful year. I am excited. Thank you so much for the recipe. I was in such a hurry to eat it I missed the garlic clove. Making it for my grandson tomorrow. Someone heard I was going to “cook the book” and gave me two pounds of reall butter for Christmas. What a great gift!!!!! Oh, and a wisk. Thanks again. And thank you Julia!

  33. Nidia says:

I watched the movie again and wanted to try this Bruschetta recipe. In searching for a site under Julia Childs, I found this site specifically about the recipe in the movie. Thank you so very much!!

  34. Angela says:

Thank you so much for posting the recipe, I was just beginning my foot work to see if Julia Child was the source of this great recipe, Im thinking of making it along with a juicey steak. I thought I was the only crazy one to want this recipe, Im glad there are other people feeling the same as me, it looked so good in the movie.

  35. Sonya says:

I have been craving bruschetta since I saw the movie!! It is definitely the most appetizing recepie in the movie. Thank you for the recepie and posting the pictures. I will fix it for our New Year Meal today! I can’t wait till tonite.

  36. Eliza says:

Thank you Thank you for posting this. I was craving this since I saw the movie. The way Julie’s husband (in the movie) devoured it made me taste it as I was watching. I, of course, had to google and find a recipe for it, which led me here!! I can’t wait to try it. Thanks again!

  37. Ama says:

My, my, my. I’ve never looked at bread in this way. When I saw the movie this recipe had me too ready to run to the store and attempt to make the bruschetta, but of course I had no clue what the dish was even called. I just knew it had tomatoes and bread. Today I finally looked all over the internet for this recipe and quickly had my son run to the store for heirloom tomatos (bad idea- he can’t ever find anyting and calls me about 3 times in a matter of 15 minutes). Nonetheless I made it and it was devine. I could really eat more, but I’m making a big pot of chicken and sausage gumbo. Anyway, thanks for soothing my craving for the bruschetta. By the way, I sprinkled a little motzarella on the brushcetts and again…DEVINE!!!

  38. Linda says:

Got the movie for Christmas and after watching it I too wanted the Bruschetta. Have search all my cookbooks for a recipe like it, when I couldn’t find it looked on computer and found all of you. Will be making it Monday and I also after watching the movie ordered the two book set. Should be here this week. Happy cooking

  39. BATnCAT says:

Fantastic recipe! Very easy to make and absolutely delicious! Actually, I didn’t have any fresh basil, so I substituted some coursely chopped cilantro. Wonderful!!

  40. Coconut says:

I made this last night for my boyfriend and me….can we say DELICIOUS!!???! This was the best bruschetta I have ever tasted….I used fresh olive bread from the farmers market, and we added feta cheese to the bruschetta….yummy in my tummy!

  41. Erin says:

oh my goodness i made this exact recipe last night (well i tossed the basil with the tomatoes and oil instead of sprinkling the basil ontop) and it was SO DELICIOUS. i am in love! i am going to make this again soon. i think what topped it off was the actual clove of garlic rubbed onto the bread. YUM. and it even tastes good the next morning, after sitting in the fridge 🙂

  42. Eliza says:

I finally made this after finding your recipe and all I can say is that I love love this bruschetta! I deviated a little from the recipe you shared (only to make it my own). I minced some garlic and put it in with the tomatoes, as well as tossing the fresh basil in there. I fried my bread in butter instead of olive oil….and all I can say is WOW. It was soooo delicious. The butter made it very rich, something I can probably only eat once in a white…but it was so worth it.

Thank you for sharing your recipe. It definitely led me in the right direction and inspired me to put my own twist on it.

  43. Linda Monroe says:

I got the movie for Christmas and all I have wanted was Bruschetta, so tonight I had two other couples for dinner and made it with Seafood Lasagna rolls with an Alfredo sauce. We loved the Lasagna we LOVED the Bruschetta. Can’t wait to try it with tomatos from my garden. Try it PLEASE you will want only that for dinner.

  44. Donna says:

This is a great blog. It’s just as if we are playing the part with Julie in the movie. Yes the brushetta reciepe was the one that caught my eye in the move & i’m glad that I found you sight to help me make it correctly. Cannot wait to try it soon.

  45. Stella says:

I’ve been wanting to make this ever since I watched that scene where she is making the bruschetta and he is eating it, in the movie. Just realized I have all the ingredients. Instead of frying the bread, if you have a griddle/grill that you use on your stovetop, you just baste your bread on both sides with olive oil and grill it for a few minutes on each side and then add the tomato topping. Just learned that at a cooking class. Yum.

  46. nicole says:

This was SUPER yummy and easy to do! i added in some yellow bellpeppers, a splash of balsamic vinagrette and believe me, it’s HEAVEN!

    I have a hope it’s figure friendly too 😉

  47. Susan says:

Try using different varienties of dipping oils. I used a pesto based dipping oil (olive oil) for frying my bread. Very yummy! Thanks for posting the original recipe. I’ll remember the garlic rub next time.

  48. Libby says:

Thank you ! Thank you! for the recipe, I was drooling during Julie & Julia when they were eating the bruschetta!! I starting searching food websites and
I couldn’t believe it was there!! YOU ROCK!!
    It was truly AWESOME………………..

  49. CORINA RODRIGUEZ says:

Thank you for posting this 🙂 I loved the movie and loved this recipe ❤ I was going to close the page after reading and doing the recipe, then I remembered the movie part where she liked having an idea of how many readers she had ❤

  50. Shara says:

Ok so I actually saw the movie when it first came out, and I of course (as it seems everyone else did) completely melted during the bruschetta scene. Well I rented it and kept it waaaay too many days and watched it like 5 times. I would start it at the bruschetta scene. How fat am I that I would pause it and just look at the that yummy golden brown bread in the pan. Yummm. Anyway thanks So much for this recipe. I am so excited to try it. I don’t know how I managed to go this long without looking for it.

  51. Chris and Stephanie says:

I just googled ‘recipes from Julie/ Julia” hoping to find this specific recipe! I was so worried that I would get caught in a mass of Julia Child recipes and never find it. I thought it was brushetta in the movie, my Mom made this all the time growing up…she would add goat cheese to it though. We would spread a thin layer of goat cheese and then add the tomatoes. I am planning on making that tonight, and the rubbing the garlic touch sounds so perfect! Thanks!

  52. Jessie says:

Thanks for posting this recipe! My mom finally made it the other night and sent me a text saying it was delicious and she almost ate all the pieces herself, leaving next to none for my dad to eat.

  53. Jude says:

Yup, I’m on the bandwagon. I thought it was the most appetizing looking dish in the entire movie (well, this and the filet of sole absolutely DRENCHED in butter in one of the earlier scenes.) I knew this was bruschetta but I couldn’t tell what it was topped with – I thought it was cherry tomatoes with some sort of bell pepper. Anyway, so glad I found this – it was the first website that popped up for me when I typed in “Julie & Julia bruschetta”.

My boyfriend thought it looked good, too, so guess what’s for dinner tomorrow night?? lol!

  54. michelle deshon says:

Well it is clear that my daughter and I had the same response as many others. The Bruschetta looked wonderful! Can’t wait to try the recipe!

  55. Sylvia says:

I live in Spain and we have a form of this for breakfast. The bread is toasted and the tomatoes are crushed with salt and garlic, so its more like a sauce on top of the bread. When I saw the movie I thought, let me try that, by far the best and easiest recipe in the movie. Now, when I’m in a hurry, for lunch I make a version of this with Avocados and red onions… yum! The messier, the better!

  56. Susan says:

Thank you so much for posting this recipe with pictures. I made it and had a bunch of friends over to watch Julie Julia. Everybody who came brought amazing dishes as well. Whenever the characters in the movie stopped to eat. We hit pause and ate as well. It was a delicious way to watch Julie Julia……… Thanks again hungry novelist….

  57. michelle says:

Thank you so much! I sitting here watching the movie thinking how good that bruchetta looked so I googled in hopes of finding out how to make it and here you are! I know what is for dinner tonight. 😉

  58. Jane says:

My son bought me the movie for Mother’s day and since then, I have been dreaming of this bruschetta. FINALLY, I have bought my bread and tomatoes in my lunchbreak and plan to indulge myself tonight.
Isn’t Google a wonderful thing? I crossed my fingers when I googled “Bruschetta Julie & Julia” and this came up!

    Yum!

  59. John says:

This is a great recipe! I put the bread in the oven on broil on high before i fried it and it got even crispier. Just make sure not to burn it in the broiler. Although my favorite type of food to cook is french food this was phenomenal i cant wait to make it again. It feels great to be only 14 and be able to make a full meal by myself from appetizer to main course with a side and a dessert.

    • Jane says:

I am impressed. Always seeking inspiration for menus. I’m not 14 (I wish I was), but I made the bruschetta last night and it was divine. Even my 14 year old son loved it……but really couldn’t cook it.
Please could you tell me your perfect menu – I’m getting bored of my own menus and always looking for something new.
PS I’m in the UK and not actually sure what a broiler is!! I’m honestly educated but still……….what is a broiler??

      • john says:

well thank you and the broiler is inside the oven usually on the ceiling of the inside and to set it you press broil on the oven and set to high at least on my oven thats it and a perfect menu for me would have to be souffle au comte/ chesse souffle, sole belle meuniere/ pan fried sole with nut brown butter and mushrooms and then creme brulee i made that menu one night for my moms boss! And it got rave reviews, the funny thing is i taught myself by cooking hundreds of recipes from the le cordon bleu at home cookbook i hope someday i can go to Le cordon bleu in Paris and own a resteraunt in Paris but that’s a little ways away from now. anyways hope you enjoy the menu i strongly suggest you try it.

  60. Melissa says:

My goodness what a delight! I can’t wait to make it! I myself have been drooling over this mouth watering treat since I have seen the movie many months ago! Finally I picked up the ingrediants today… I know it will be a hit! I plan to make it for our monthly scrapbooking night this weekend! Wish me luck!

  61. helen of troy says:

Just watched the movie and loved, loved, loved it!!!! And yes, the bruschetta was beyond delicious in the movie – best part, can’t say I want to deal w/ a duck. Will make this weekend !!!

  62. vsj says:

I have to admit I am not a cook but after watching that scene OMG. I had no idea where to start so I bought a loaf of french bread and put it in the broiler – since frying scares me. I cut up tomatoes with yellow, red and orange bell peppers. Drizzled Italian Dressing all over it and scooped it on the bread. I also topped it with fresh mozarrella cheeze. What a treat. Now I’m going to try the real thing!

  63. Brenda Weaver says:

Cannot believe ther are others out there like me wanting this recipie. I have just spent the last week watching this delightful feelgood movie 4 times after TIVO-ing it. never have replied to any thing like this before but ot looks like a fun thing to be able to compare notes with other foodies. I tend to like a few short cuts to my cooking sort of the semi-homade thing , thought I might uuse “Garlic Expressions” to toss my fresh tomatoes and mix with I really like the flavor combo there. Thaks again for your site.

  64. Sharon Burnham says:

I can’t get Julie’s bruschetta off my mind. Looks like there are many others. I will make this tomorrow for dinner.

  65. gabby says:

thankyou soo much for posting this. my stomach is grumbling already. im about to start making it. Bon appetit!

  66. Kristy says:

Thank you, thank you , thank you!! My mother-in-law took me and my sister-in-law to see this movie and I guess we are just like everyone else that saw the movie. We had to have this recipe! I immediately came home and started seaching for it but couldn’t find it. The very first day the movie was out on DVD, I ran and bought it. Then the other night I was watching it for the 1000th time and thought I have to have that recipe! And here you are!!! Thanks so much! My MIL bought us the cookbook from the movie and we had a dinner party. Now my MIL has stage 4 Melanoma cancer. What memories we have from this. I plan on cooking this for her. She is in her final days and I know this will bring a smile to her face. Thanks so much! Bon appetit!!

  67. Jessica says:

Thank you so much for posting this! I watched the movie last night, before going to bed, and have been dreaming about this dish ever since! Thank you!

  68. Debbie says:

Thanks so much for posting this recipe… I have been trying for weeks to find it. Does anyone know the recipe for the chocolate pie ? i would love to have it…

  69. Cayt says:

I have been DYING to try this since I saw i saw it in the movie!!!!!!! It looked absolutely delicious, but didn’t look quite like bruschetta, but I am happy to know it is. I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO excited to try this!!!

  70. Sangeeta says:

Oh thank god!! i have been dying to cook this ever since i saw the movie!! Finally!! Can you suggest what other breads can be used in place of the one you have mentioned?

    • hungrynovelist says:

Any rustic type baguette or ciabatta should be good – something with a coarse texture rather than smooth texture so the surface of the bread will brown up nicely when fried in the olive oil. Good luck!

  71. Lisa S says:

I just had to say thank you for posting this recipe! I have been dreaming about making this dish for a long time. I watched the movie for the tenth time (at least) and decided I had to find the recipe. I found a link to your blog and I made it for dinner last night for my husband and myself. It was absolutely delicious!!! I enjoyed browsing your blog, and will read on. Thanks!!

  72. Deb says:

Just ate Julia Child’s fried bread with chopped tomato, chopped basil, heart smart oil, and crumbled some feta cheese and finely chopped celery with salt and pepper, WOW, my husband said it was SOOOOO good, i am still munching out!! Kudo’s Julia Child!!!!!!! I am in love with this recipe!!!

  73. Claudia says:

I just got a new HD TV and watched Julie & Julia. All the food looked absolutely delicious, but the bruschetta was especially eye-appealing. I just made it–WOW! It was amazing! I see why they devoured it in the movie! Used all the ingredients as directed, except I fried the bread in olive oil and a pat of butter, and I combined the fresh basil with the tomatoes and olive oil. Go for it! You won’t be sorry!

  74. Jamie says:

The bruschetta looked amazing in the movie and I absolutely had to try it. The first time I cooked it, it was great but I noticed it had a very oily taste. I used the amount of oil in the recipe. What else could I do to improve the taste?

    • hungrynovelist says:

You could toast the bread instead of frying it, I suppose. Or use less olive oil in the tomato mixture. Or use a milder tasting oil? Or all of the above!

  75. Deb says:

I found if i bought Texas Garlic Toast and browned them on a tin, then added the other ingredients there was no oily taste, really loved the taste too!!

  76. Diane says:

Thank you so much for taking the time to put together this recipe & post those scrumptious pics. In response to the full meal/side dish query: during the bruschetta scene in “J&J”, I believe I remember “Julie” taking a bite of what looked like Italian sausage [did someone already mention this?]. And, thanks to Deb for the Texas Garlic Toast suggestion!

    • diaryofanaveragekid says:

I noticed that too. I think she used some sort of chicken or pork and used the brushetta as a sort of side for dinner, if u look on their table you see a chicken looking dish next to the veggies. Hope this helped 🙂

  77. sara says:

Since Ive seen the movie this dish is the only one i have been dying to try. I didnt even know what its called. I had to look up julie and julia recipes…lol. I cant wait to cook it!!!

  78. Ken Clements says:

Thanks! It was beyond great. Our tomato harvest just came ripe and this is what I planted it for. My teen daughters loved it too. Mine looked exactly like yours, thanks for the pics and legwork.

  79. Chelsea says:

I completely agree! When I first watched Julie & Julia and the scene with the amazing Bruschetta, all I could think was (in the words of Liz Lemon for those of you that enjoy 30 Rock), “I want to go to there.”
I finally made it about a week ago and it was simply a revelation. I live in a small town in Montana so getting my hands on some good fresh ingredients was a bit of a challenge. We lack high quality produce in our grocery stores but I did luck out on some amazing heirloom and grape tomatoes at a farmers market here and the meal turned out amazing! And I did eat it the next day as well!!!

  80. Linda says:

    Thanks for posting the recipe!

While absolutely wonderful, this should come with the following WARNING – “Caution – this dish can be habit forming!”. This is such an easy and delicious dish that hubby and I have it for dinner a couple of times a week!! Now if I can only find a carb friendly substitute for garlicy, crispy, fried bread…..

  81. roseanne says:

  86. bptr says:

Also, I’m not sure if she throws on sea salt or lemon juice right at the end before they eat in the movie scene. Can anyone tell? It looks like she has a lemon sitting on the table next to something else right before that.

  87. Jaclyn Yowell says:

  91. carol Crosby says:

Thank you for blogging this recipe. I made it for supper tonight and I want to report it is the best bruschetta I have ever had. The recipe is very easy to make and yet it tasted like it took hours to prepare. Many Many Thanks.

  92. blw says:

We’ve enjoyed making this many, many times over the last year! It’s funny – my Daughter’s Confirmation is this weekend, and my Son’s graduation is next weekend, and the one food they have both requested? This bruschetta recipe! Thanks so much for posting!

  95. diaryofanaveragekid says:

I’d like to point out, that if you look carefully at the food in the movie, it appears to have yellow and green chopped peppers in it. Especially looking at the bowl in the kitchen behind her.

    My recipe for it:

    1 Tomato Chopped
    1 Green Bell Pepper Chopped
    1 Red Bell Pepper Chopped
    1 yellow Bell Pepper Chopped
Sliced Frenchbread. ( I used hamburger buns seperated, Cheapie Way to Pull it off! :D)
1/2 Sweet Red Onion (Optional, adds a bit of an extra flavor kick)

Mix Together all chopped veggies in a bowl, Add olive oil and salt. But I used A vinegarett salad dressing (Romano and basil, just a dash or two) Afterward, toast the bread of ur choice in butter, (think of toasting a grilled cheese sandwhich!) Then after all the bread is toasted, top with the veggies and if you’d like a little bit of shreaded cheese (it helped hold the veggies on the bread so it was less messy!) and microwave for 30 seconds prior to serving. Easy as that! 😀

    Hope this helped someone.

    • Sarah Greenfield Nee Speker says:

@diaryofanaveragekid – not peppers actually – the yellow is yellow tomatoes and the green is the torn pieces of basil….check out Susan Spungen’s recipe (the food stylist from the film) – exactly the same as Hungry Novelists x

  96. Patricia says:

    Hi 🙂
I was watching the movie and I stop it to search the recipe and doing for dinner lol
    Thanks for posting 😀

  97. Kayla says:

I’m so glad someone else thought that, too! I had been thinking about them. I was right. It’s basically just peppers on garlic bread. And it’s even more exiting since it’s vegan. Yay! Thanks for posting.

  98. Caroline Soto says:

WOW WOW WOW WOW!!!!!!!! Thank you soo much for this i was dying tk have this recipe. I fried it with olive oil and it was amazing!! Question: can just regular red tomatoes be used? And what kind of bread works best?

    • hungrynovelist says:

Yes you can use regular tomatoes but the better quality (and more in season) the tomatoes, the better the bruschetta will taste. I think bruschetta is best on a rustic type Italian bread that’s airy in texture and not too dense – a good quality baguette would do too.

    • Deb Henrichs says:

I used regular home grown tomatoes out of our garden, they tated really good. I do think the olive oil and basil make the taste. I fix this wonderful Julia Childs recipe often and people just love it. I used the Texas Toast with Garlic, i was in a hurry and it worked out really well. Some time i will buy the bread and pan fry it. Dinner parties and guests always love this recipe and always ask if i am making the French Julia Child dish. So glad i watched that movie and bought Julia’s cook book!

  99. The Guat says:

I went searching online for this recipe, never thought I’d find it on Word Press. I’ve been meaning to make it since I saw it a couple of years ago in the movie … never happened of course. Then I saw the movie again on cable and went out to buy the ingredients today. Thanks for posting the recipe.;)

  100. Nina Tamayo - Aninias says:

Bruschetta and Julia’s first dining scene in the movie are my two best picks. It’s sooo good that I actually included it in my Review along with 10 other video clips solely showing off the magical ways food comforts the characters in Julie and Julia.

Thanks for posting this recipe… my husband would be more than happy to try this out. I showed him the clip of this scene and I saw his mouth involuntarily opened… that’s how powerful Chris Messina’s acting chops is … 🙂

  101. luvartgrl says:

So I am planning on making this tomorrow evening. I am wondering if anyone has added anything else to it,,, like mozzarella. I read on another website they added Parmesan cheese. But what about other vegetables? Any thoughts? Also I thought about using pretzel bread but I also have Italian. Has anyone else tried it with different breads?

    • Creena says:

I’ve added eggplant, zuccini, artichoke hearts, olives and, yes, various cheeses. When it comes to bruschetta..it all comes together, with a good extra virgin olive oil.
      🙂

  102. Sandy Darlene says:

Making the bruschetta AGAIN right now! The bread is grilling as I type! The tomatoes and basil smell sooooooooooooooooo good! The best ever!

  103. Anita says:

In the scene when they eat the bruschetta. What are they eating with a fork. What is on their plates kilbasa? Potatoes?
